BEHIND THE FILES

Emerson AlmeidaAuthor of Clara's Files

Synopsis

Clara's Files brings together, in a single volume, a science fiction trilogy following humanity's struggle for survival after a catastrophe of solar origin.

A coronal mass ejection strikes Earth, damaging electrical systems and communications and triggering a succession of social collapses.

Amid the blackout, families seek shelter in a military bunker, while Clara, Matheus, and their companions face losses, separations, and decisions that transform their destinies.

The characters' journey extends beyond the planet and reaches the Moon, where the presence of an ancestral race and a warship made of intelligent biological material reveals an unknown reality.

A mysterious craft of light connects events on Earth to the secrets surrounding Clara, bringing survivors closer to technologies and forms of intelligence that defy their understanding.

Between Earth's devastation and the lunar mysteries, the narrative intertwines suspense, human conflicts, and encounters with an ancestral civilization.

Across the three parts, the characters must confront the limits of trust, the bonds that keep them united, and the consequences of their choices in the face of an uncertain future for humanity.

Prologue — The Hatch

One day after the blackout. Lunar orbit.

The passenger woke because something had struck the capsule three times. It was not coming from the engine. The sound had the patience of someone asking permission from the other side of a door. He narrowed his eyes at the porthole. Earth was turning too far away to believe in it. He tried to remember Elsie's face before the gas flooded the launch cabin. He remembered her hand slipping from his. Then, nothing. The other capsules floated around him, dark. One passed so close that he saw, on the inside of its window, the dull imprint of a palm. He could not tell whether anyone was inside. Sunlight swept across the curved edge of the lunar surface. A line opened from end to end, like a seam under strain. Corridors appeared, rows of white points, depths for which the Moon was not thick enough. Three more knocks came from the hull. He raised his arm instinctively. Beneath his skin, in the same place where he had carried since childhood three moles almost identical to Clara's, a blue light awakened.

The hatch finished opening. Before the first craft approached, he recognized the sound he had heard in his childhood backyard: a dripping tap in a house that no longer existed.
